Hand-made Farmstead Goat Cheese

Hawaii Island Goat Dairy is looking for a new intern!

A little bit about us:
We are a small, farmstead cheese making business on the Big Island of Hawaii. We maintain a herd size of approximately 125 goats and currently produce around 1700 pounds of cheese per month that we sell locally to various hotels, restaurants, and select retail outlets. Our cheeses include our award winning chèvre and crottins, feta, mozzarella, and seasonal hard cheeses. Everything is done here on the property.

About the internship:
As an intern you will learn about the working process of a small-scale goat dairy from start to finish, including breeding, kidding, and all other aspects of livestock management, milking, cheese making, packaging, selling, and general farm maintenance (including scrubbing buckets!).

This is for a 6 month internship for one individual only. You must be 18 years or older at the start of the internship, must have a valid drivers license and clean driving record. Our property is strictly drug and tobacco free and you must be able to pass a drug test. Interns can expect a full-time work schedule with long hours, early mornings, and sometimes very late nights (mostly during kidding season) We are looking for a hard worker, someone with a willingness to learn and that can take direction well. Must be a team player with a positive attitude. Attention to detail as well as being able to work independently are very important! You will be working directly with large animals as well as in a sanitary food processing facility. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.

Intern Accommodations:
You will be living in a vintage Silver Streak trailer located next to our barn. It can only accommodate a single occupancy. Sorry, no families. (See website for photos) There is an outdoor shower, cooking facilities inside trailer and wireless internet access. You will be expected to buy and make your own food. Dairy will provide you with a weekly food stipend.
There is also a large vegetable garden with space for your personal use. Intern will be given one day off per week. Must provide your own appropriate work clothing, rubber boots/ work shoes.

Location and Weather:
We are located 10 minutes outside of the town of Honokaa, approximately 2,000 feet above sea level. Average daily temperature ranges from the low 50’s to the low 80’s. Expect a temperate climate with LOTS of rain! We are a 30 minute drive to the nearest sandy beach.
